Amazon's Zoox to Launch Command Hub in Arizona, Expand Testing ...
Zoox will deploy retrofitted Toyota SUVs with safety drivers to map Dallas and Phoenix before launching robotaxis, serving over 300,000 riders across 10 U.S. markets, the company said.
- On Monday, Amazon-owned Zoox announced it will begin testing in Dallas, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, sending a small number of retrofitted Toyota Highlander SUVs with safety drivers to each city, expanding its U.S. testing to 10 cities.
- Zoox said Phoenix will allow testing our sensors and batteries against extreme heat and dust on high-speed roads, while Dallas offers a valuable environment to refine its artificial intelligence.
- Zoox will open depots in Dallas and Phoenix and a Fusion Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, which the company said will create hundreds of jobs and join centers in Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Zoox's move intensifies rivalry among robotaxi developers as it expands beyond Las Vegas and San Francisco, where it has served more than 300,000 riders amid growing competition from Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous unit, and Tesla.
- Zoox is still awaiting federal approval to operate commercially after an NHTSA exemption last August and has opened a 220,000-square-foot factory in the San Francisco Bay Area aiming to produce 10,000 vehicles a year.
