Amazon puts Amwell co-founder in charge of healthcare unit; longtime executive to depart
Neil Lindsay will leave before year-end as Amazon puts telehealth founder Roy Schoenberg in charge of its fast-growing healthcare business.
On Wednesday, Amazon announced Dr. Roy Schoenberg, co-founder of telehealth firm Amwell, will lead its healthcare business starting July 1, replacing Neil Lindsay who departs before year-end after 16 years at the company.
Lindsay's departure marks a shift from non-clinical leadership, as he had no prior healthcare background when assuming the role in November 2021 after serving as senior vice president for Prime and holding marketing roles including for Kindle e-readers.
Amazon's healthcare division, which includes One Medical clinics and prescription-by-mail services, ranks among the company's fastest-growing businesses, though results remain undisclosed; Schoenberg also serves as CEO of elder care startup Aileen.ai.
Markets responded positively to the appointment, with Amazon shares rising 2.5% to $271.85 and Amwell gaining 4.2% to $8.84 following the announcement.
Questions remain unresolved about whether Schoenberg will step down from his CEO position at Aileen.ai before assuming his new healthcare leadership role at Amazon.
