Amazon Delays Launch of Leo, Its Satellite Network and Starlink Rival

Amazon says Leo will offer faster speeds and lower costs than rivals, with enterprise and government beta tests already underway.

  • Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced on Thursday that the Amazon Leo satellite network will launch in mid-2026, delaying the service from its originally planned late-2025 timeline, according to his annual shareholder letter published Wednesday.
  • The Federal Communications Commission ordered Amazon to deploy around 1,600 satellites by July, but the company currently has only about 240 in orbit and requested an extension, expecting just 700 satellites ready by the deadline.
  • Facing competition from SpaceX's Starlink, which serves over 10 million customers with over 10,000 satellites, Jassy claims Leo will offer stronger performance at lower cost and integrate seamlessly with AWS for enterprise data storage and AI.
  • Amazon has secured revenue commitments from enterprise customers including Delta Airlines and JetBlue, which began testing the service with "select enterprise customers" late last year to prepare for commercial availability.
  • To secure a Federal Communications Commission extension, Amazon says it spent billions on launch contracts through Q1 2029 and expects to have customer terminals ready by the mid-2026 launch date for broader rollout.
