Twitch Finally Lets You Opt Out of AI Training, Years After It Started
Creators can disable the new setting in channel privacy controls, but Twitch says other AI-powered features, including captions and safety tools, will still work.
- On Wednesday, Twitch introduced a setting allowing streamers to opt out of having their content used to train parent company Amazon's generative AI models, which had been automatically enabled for all accounts.
- Creators immediately criticized the change, arguing the feature should have been opt-in. Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton acknowledged the community's opposition, noting that if the feature were opt-in, "nobody would opt in."
- Users can disable the "Training for Generative AI" toggle within security and privacy settings; however, this does not prevent Amazon from using content for other AI-supported features like AutoMod or automated captions.
- Nearly 3,000 viewers attended a live stream where Twitch Head of Community Mary Kish and Minton addressed the policy. User Legundo urged others to "make sure to turn this off and tell Twitch we don't want this crap!"
- Amazon is scaling its AI infrastructure to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, leveraging its 2014 purchase of Twitch. The platform's vast library of stream recordings provides significant training data for these generative models.
