Amazon Sees Faster Delivery Speeds with Hi-Tech Driver Eyeglasses, AI

Amazon's AI glasses provide hands-free scanning, navigation, and hazard alerts to delivery drivers, aiming to reduce delivery time and improve efficiency, currently tested in North America.

  • At its San Francisco 'Delivering the Future' event on Wednesday, Amazon publicly showed advanced smart glasses for delivery drivers and confirmed North American trials are underway.
  • To cut delivery time, Amazon focused on the 'last 100 yards' by designing glasses to give delivery drivers a hands-free workflow, reducing time spent switching among phone, package and surroundings.
  • The system pairs hardware and software by providing turn-by-turn walking navigation, package scanning and proof-of-delivery photo capture, using AI-powered sensing, computer vision and camera with a paired controller worn in delivery vest that includes swappable battery packs, a dedicated emergency button, and auto-activation when parked.
  • Amazon says the glasses will help delivery associates deliver packages more safely and efficiently, and Beryl Tomay said `It reduces the need to manage a phone and a package`.
  • Despite the demo, Amazon did not provide a timeline for rollout and says it plans to refine the technology before wider deployment, anticipating features like real-time mistake detection, pet alerts and low-light adjustments, with support for prescription and transitional lenses.
