Amazon to invest $1B into data center communities amid backlash against data center rollouts
The company will fund education, job training and infrastructure while publishing annual energy and water use and ending nondisclosure agreements with government agencies.
On Friday, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman announced a $1 billion investment over five years in United States communities hosting data centers to address concerns about electricity and water usage.
Rising local opposition prompted the move, as Amazon faces more than 100 data center moratoriums nationwide and protests have spread across 42 states over power bills, water use, and secrecy.
The "Built Together" program directs funds toward education and training, covering out-of-pocket costs for an estimated 300,000 students and providing energy upgrades that save households about $700 annually.
Alongside the funding, Amazon will end non-disclosure agreements with government agencies on new projects, while AWS reports it is 75 per cent of the way toward becoming water-positive by 2030.
AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the strategic urgency, stating, "There is urgency to this data center buildout because we aren't the only country that sees the benefits of AI.
