Amazon Offers Its AI Shopping Tech to Outside Retailers in New Phase of Agentic Commerce Race

Amazon said retailers can launch tailored AI shopping tools in as little as 60 days through AWS.

  • On Wednesday, Amazon launched the Agentic Shopping Assistant via AWS, licensing the technology behind Alexa for Shopping to retailers. The service packages architecture, starter code, and learnings for custom AI shopping tools.
  • Amazon's internal AI shopping assistant, rebranded earlier this month to Alexa for Shopping, was used by more than 300 million customers last year. The company now positions itself as the infrastructure backbone for AI-powered commerce.
  • Kate Spade became the first customer to deploy the service, launching an AI Gift Concierge running on Anthropic's Haiku 4.5 model through Amazon Bedrock. The tool engages shoppers in conversational dialogue to deliver curated product recommendations.
  • Retailers can launch custom assistants in as little as 60 days, according to Amazon. The move intensifies competition with Google and OpenAI, who are also deploying AI shopping infrastructure.
  • Amazon describes itself as Customer Zero, testing all components internally first to validate the solution. Every deployment generates revenue for the broader AWS ecosystem through Bedrock, AgentCore, and OpenSearch, though retailers may hesitate to share data with a direct competitor.
