Amazon plans to acquire Apple’s 20% stake in Globalstar

Amazon says the deal will expand satellite coverage, capacity and voice service for phones while preserving Apple’s existing connectivity features.

  • Amazon filed an "Application for Consent to Assign and Transfer Control of Licenses and Authorizations" with the Federal Communications Commission, seeking to acquire Globalstar and take over Apple Inc.'s 20% equity stake in the company.
  • Apple previously secured a 20% stake in Globalstar through a $1.1 billion investment, while Globalstar developed a 48-satellite C-3 constellation to power Emergency SOS features on iPhones.
  • To conduct the merger, Amazon created a subsidiary, "Grapefruit Acquisition Sub II," urging the Federal Communications Commission to approve the deal as the e-commerce giant competes with SpaceX in satellite connectivity.
  • Amazon told the Federal Communications Commission it plans to serve "smartphones and other mobile devices across multiple carriers and vendors," using next-generation D2D satellites to augment Globalstar's services with robust voice and data connectivity.
  • The acquisition positions Amazon against rivals AST SpaceMobile and Starlink Mobile, aiming to eliminate cellular dead zones by using satellites that act as orbiting cell towers beaming data to unmodified phones.
