Amazon launches first Android tablets, raising prices and incorporating Alexa
The new lineup runs Android with Google Play access and Alexa+ built in, marking Amazon’s shift to pricier tablets and away from Fire OS.
- On Thursday, Amazon unveiled three premium Alexa-branded tablets running full Android with Google Play Store access, marking a strategic shift from the budget-focused Fire tablet line it manufactured for over a decade.
- Amazon hardware chief Panos Panay directed the team to redesign tablets from scratch, addressing long-standing consumer complaints about limited apps and plastic construction on Fire devices the company will no longer manufacture.
- The lineup includes the 12-inch Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, 11-inch Alexa Tablet 11, and 8-inch Alexa Tablet 8, priced from $230 to $550 with aluminum unibody designs and optional Nanomatte displays.
- Integrating 'On-Screen Intelligence,' the tablets let users ask Alexa to analyze screen content for contextual suggestions, while a Kindle mode silences notifications and reduces blue light to "preserve the sanctuary of reading," Panay said.
- All devices ship October 14, 2026, in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada; Amazon is also launching child-specific versions bundled with protective cases and a one-year Amazon Kids Plus subscription.
