Amazon Behind Massive Private Gas Plant for New Data Centers

The project would emit more than 30 million metric tons of greenhouse gases a year and could become the nation’s largest single pollution source.

  • According to The Distilled newsletter reported Friday, Amazon is building a 7.65-gigawatt gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas, to power artificial intelligence data centers at a site known as GW Ranch.
  • The facility is permitted to emit 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, making it the largest pollution site in the United States, according to state permits reviewed by market intelligence company Cleanview.
  • An Amazon spokesperson stated the plant will avoid raising electricity costs for Texas families and will use "non-potable, brackish groundwater" to minimize watershed pressure.
  • Amazon joins Microsoft, Google, and Meta in developing off-grid gas power infrastructure, leveraging its portfolio of 10 gigawatts of carbon-free energy across 40 projects in Texas.
  • The project creates tension with Amazon's commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under The Climate Pledge, as the facility will emit significant greenhouse gases and methane.
