Amateur Ryder Cowan takes the early lead and is tied for second in a strong US Open debut
The 21-year-old amateur briefly led before finishing at 2-under 68, matching the lowest round by an amateur at Shinnecock Hills.
Amateur Ryder Cowan sits tied for second at the U.S. Open after shooting 2-under 68 in Thursday's opening round at Shinnecock Hills, briefly holding the lead during his major championship debut.
Cowan earned his tournament spot after shooting 6-under 138 at a qualifier in Florida at BallenIsles Country Club and surviving a three-man playoff as a senior at the University of Oklahoma.
Previously a runner-up in the DriveChipPutt National Finals seven years ago, the Haskins Trophy finalist credited his preparation, stating, "the work I put in every single day gives me that belief."
Trailing Wyndham Clark by four shots, Cowan is positioned to become the first amateur to finish a U.S. Open round in the top five since Brian Campbell in 2015.
His performance at Shinnecock Hills has established him as a player to watch, even as Cowan admits he is "not used to all these crowds" while seeking to maintain momentum through the weekend.
