More than 1,000 Migrants Cross Channel Amid Hot Weather
Home Office figures show 989 people arrived in 14 boats, as the year’s total crossings reached 8,565.
A total of 989 migrants arrived in England via the English Channel in 14 boats over the bank holiday weekend, ending a fortnight without any crossings.
Record-Breaking temperatures coincided with the surge, as 8,565 migrants have crossed the Channel so far in 2026, down 37% from the same point last year.
The Crown Prosecution Service lead Sarah Dineley noted, "Many of these cases were charged within hours," as authorities charged three migrants with endangering lives and jailed three others for illegal entry.
Turkish national Osman Yesil, 47, and Algerian national Tawfiq Boubazine, 33, were sentenced to eight months in prison by Folkestone Magistrates after pleading guilty on Monday.
Although 2026 arrivals remain below the 2022 peak of more than 45,000, these bank holiday crossings account for more than one in 10 people entering from mainland Europe this year.
