Criminal Network Behind Illegal Plastic Waste Trade Dismantled by Spanish Authorities
- The Guardia Civil dismantled a criminal network involved in illegal plastic waste trafficking in Spain and abroad in an operation called Finoplast.
- The inquiry started in late 2022 after SEPRONA identified an unauthorized dump holding several thousand tonnes of plastic debris at a defunct brick manufacturing site in Bierzo, León.
- The scheme involved transporting over 41,000 tonnes of mostly agricultural plastic waste from France and Portugal to illegal sites in Spain and exporting nearly 22,800 tonnes abroad disguised as raw material.
- Authorities arrested five suspects, investigated 15 more, seized documents, searched companies and residences, and confirmed 15 of 16 waste samples contained toxic substances according to forensic reports.
- The crackdown, supported by multiple agencies including Eurojust and Europol, marks one of Europe's largest illegal waste operations and involves ongoing financial probes in coordination with Germany, Switzerland, and the UK.
