Allies and Morrison unveils masterplan around new Man Utd stadium
Published today, July 9, the Trafford Wharfside masterplan establishes a new city district for Trafford and Greater Manchester, featuring a 100,000-capacity Manchester United stadium at its heart near Old Trafford.
Manchester United agreed last month to purchase a 10ha plot from logistics firm Indurent, owned by Blackstone, located 350m from Old Trafford, after recommending an all-new stadium for around £2 billion.
Foster + Partners designed the stadium, dubbed 'Wembley of the North,' as part of a 15-year regeneration plan expected to create 48,000 local jobs and provide a £7.3 billion annual boost to the UK economy.
CEO Collette Roche described the masterplan as a 'significant milestone,' while Trafford Council leader Coun Tom Ross added the initiative starts a 'long journey' to establish a world-class destination for residents and businesses.
The Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation, chaired by Sebastian Coe, is backing the plan, which includes future consultations on designs and central areas with building heights reaching up to 40 storeys.
