Guest commentary: The US has yet to achieve its long-held ideals
Today, our nation will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the “Declaration of Independence.” Born in revolution, the new nation has been portrayed as forging an intense dedication to the proposition that “All men are created equal.”
All men are created equal. We have unalienable rights. Just government is based on the consent of those governed. That sounds pretty good, doesn't it? These three ideas, proclaimed by our founding fathers 250 years ago, have changed our lives and the world for the better. That's why we celebrate this day and why we love our country.
Tomorrow, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, the historical and international impact will be remembered, but the ambivalences of ideals and realities should not fall out of perception.
