Local School Divisions See Incidents of TikTok Trend that Damages Chromebooks
- Several local school divisions reported incidents in 2025 of students damaging school-issued Chromebooks by inserting objects into USB ports, causing battery punctures and fire risks.
- The incidents stem from a viral TikTok trend known as the Chromebook Challenge, which urges students to damage laptops by inserting paper clips or pencils into USB ports and may spark fires.
- Bedford County Public Schools reported 17 incidents across grade levels, Campbell County around 10, and Nelson County two, while Lynchburg City Schools confirmed no such cases and are monitoring the situation.
- Nelson County Superintendent Amanda Hester said the challenge “poses a fire risk” and warned that such vandalism could lead to disciplinary and law enforcement consequences for students.
- School divisions have informed families about consequences and financial liabilities related to the trend and continue to work with students and parents to encourage responsible technology use.
