Manitoba asks civil servants to help flood prep on First Nation
Nearly 110,000 sandbags have been delivered as volunteers and provincial staff build clay dikes and prepare for a likely evacuation.
- The Manitoba government is calling on public servants to help with flood preparations at Peguis First Nation, as officials warn an evacuation is "very likely" due to potential road closures and restricted medical access.
- Preparations began last week after the flood-prone First Nation was warned of water levels similar to 2022, when more than 2,000 residents were forced out and hundreds of homes were damaged.
- More than 100 provincial employees, along with volunteers from the Canadian Red Cross and Team Rubicon, are building clay dikes and placing nearly 110,000 sandbags to protect homes.
- "It's a bit of an all-hands-on-deck situation," Lisa Naylor, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, said Tuesday, as the City of Winnipeg also sent additional sandbags to bolster efforts.
- Runoff in the Fisher and Icelandic River basins could start next week, with peak flows expected between April 23 and 28, intensifying flood mitigation urgency.
