Kenya: Murkomen Joins Ruto, Dangote for Lamu Refinery Groundbreaking

- On Wednesday, five African heads of state led a groundbreaking ceremony for the $16 billion East Africa Oil Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, marking the formal start of the energy development project.
- Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, whose firm Dangote Industries backs the project, stated the refinery will process 700,000 barrels of oil per day to boost Africa's self-sufficiency in finished products.
- Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen joined regional leaders for the launch, while construction equipment has already arrived through the Port of Lamu for the 40-month project.
- Deputy President Kithure Kindiki previously noted the refinery could create about 50,000 jobs while positioning Lamu as a petrochemical hub and reducing the region's reliance on imported petroleum products.
- The project faces a legal challenge from Salim Tima Swale and 132 others, who are contesting activities on land they claim to occupy, as the Land Court has ordered a status quo.
