A more than 700-year-old, oddly shaped child's skull has been unearthed in northwestern Argentina. The find quickly stirred public opinion: the strangely flat, asymmetrical skull was thought by many to be extraterrestrial. However, the scientific explanation is much more prosaic. The skull bears the traces of ancient cranial distortion, which for centuries was a means of expressing social belonging in South America.
