Alibaba Unveils Its Most Powerful AI Chip as a Domestic Nvidia Alternative
Alibaba said the new chip triples performance and the Qwen3.7-Max model can run autonomously for up to 35 hours.
On Wednesday, Alibaba announced The Zhenwu M890, an artificial intelligence chip delivering three times the performance of its predecessor with 144 GB GPU memory and 800 GB per second interchip bandwidth.
Speaking at the Alibaba Cloud Summit in Hangzhou, Liu Weiguang, senior vice-president of Alibaba Cloud, framed AI as a new form of manufacturing through "training and inference factories."
Alibaba also revealed the next generation large language model, Qwen3, designed for AI agents, which excels at "long-horizon tasks" and autonomously operates for 35 hours without performance degradation.
Zhou Jingren, chief AI architect of the Alibaba Group Technology Committee, said the model outperformed all other AI models in China; Alibaba has delivered 560,000 Zhenwu units to over 400 customers.
In early April, Alibaba and China Telecom launched a data center in southern China powered by homegrown chips, positioning the company against rival Nvidia as it struggles to supply advanced chips to China.
