Alibaba Unveils Its Most Powerful AI Chip as a Domestic Nvidia Alternative

Alibaba said the new chip triples performance and the Qwen3.7-Max model can run autonomously for up to 35 hours.

  • On Wednesday, Alibaba announced The Zhenwu M890, an artificial intelligence chip delivering three times the performance of its predecessor with 144 GB GPU memory and 800 GB per second interchip bandwidth.
  • Speaking at the Alibaba Cloud Summit in Hangzhou, Liu Weiguang, senior vice-president of Alibaba Cloud, framed AI as a new form of manufacturing through "training and inference factories."
  • Alibaba also revealed the next generation large language model, Qwen3, designed for AI agents, which excels at "long-horizon tasks" and autonomously operates for 35 hours without performance degradation.
  • Zhou Jingren, chief AI architect of the Alibaba Group Technology Committee, said the model outperformed all other AI models in China; Alibaba has delivered 560,000 Zhenwu units to over 400 customers.
  • In early April, Alibaba and China Telecom launched a data center in southern China powered by homegrown chips, positioning the company against rival Nvidia as it struggles to supply advanced chips to China.
