Algoma Steel Suffers Unplanned Power Outage, Suspends Electric Arc Furnace Production
Algoma said the outage could halt furnace production for up to 21 days while it works with GE Vernova and the Independent Electricity System Operator on restart options.
On Monday, August 17, 2026, Algoma Steel Group Inc. suspended production at its electric arc furnace following an unplanned outage at the Lake Superior Power facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
One turbine unit at the LSP generating facility detected an abnormal condition and was automatically taken offline; the remaining units continued operating unaffected.
Algoma expects the EAF outage to last no more than 21 days, though the company is working with GE Vernova to commission a spare turbine that could enable restart within approximately 10 days.
Downstream finishing and shipping activities continue, and Algoma does not expect a significant impact on committed customer deliveries while accelerating maintenance to reduce future downtime.
The company is pursuing alternative onsite power with the Independent Electricity System Operator , though it cautioned that future shipment volumes may be affected by the ongoing disruption.
