Algeria has not been spared from the summer forest fires: two people, including an eight-year-old boy, died Wednesday in fires near the city of Béjaïa, in the northeast of the country. Several other people were injured and numerous families were evacuated.
In Algeria, 72 forest fires broke out in 6 different regions in the last 24 hours. Civil Defense teams brought 64 of the fires under control, while firefighting efforts continue at the remaining 8.
Of the 58 forest fires that broke out in eastern Algeria due to the heatwave, 21 have been brought under control; aerial and ground efforts continue to extinguish 37 fires. Evacuations have been carried out in some areas as a precautionary measure.
