Alex Palou's continued IndyCar domination draws more boos as he chases a 2nd straight Indy 500 crown
Palou earned the pole with a 232.248 mph average as he chases a second straight Indianapolis 500 victory and some fans grow weary of his winning.
On Sunday, Spanish driver Alex Palou won the pole for the Indianapolis 500 with a four-lap average of 232.248 mph, delivering on Chip Ganassi Racing managing director Mike Hull's bold pre-qualifying prediction despite drawing a late qualifying spot.
Palou's dominance stems from three consecutive series titles and a commanding 27-point lead in this year's standings with three wins in the season's first six races, positioning him as betting favorite to win the 500 again.
Over three years, Palou accumulated 14 victories and 17 top-five finishes in 41 races. Will Power, 2018 Indianapolis 500 champion, recently credited his success to "qualifying well, executing in the race, and top notch pit stops."
During practice for the sold-out Indianapolis 500, Palou heard boos from multiple crowd sections for the first time, saying "We're getting booed for being successful and for doing the right thing," while remaining focused on Sunday's race.
The quick transition from champion to villain is nothing new in sports, but in IndyCar's relatively friendly confines, Palou remains a rarity. Yet in Indianapolis specifically, he stays popular as the defending 2025 Indy champ with fans clamoring for his autograph.
