Games-Eala’s Gold Medal Hopes Dashed by China’s Wang at Asiad Tennis
Wang Xiyu rallied after dropping the first set, and China secured an all-Chinese final as Eala settled for her second straight Asian Games bronze.
- On Thursday, October 1, 2026, Philippine tennis star Alex Eala fell to China's Wang Xiyu 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Asian Games women's singles semifinals at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya, Japan, settling for bronze.
- Entering the tournament as the top seed, Eala dominated early with a 5-0 lead before Wang rallied to force a decider, ultimately completing the upset victory in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
- The defeat denies Eala a chance to become the first Filipino tennis champion since 1962 and disqualifies her from direct entry into the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics tennis tournament.
- Wang advances to face compatriot Zhang Shuai in an all-China final, while Eala noted, "at the end of the day, I gave my all," after matching her bronze medal performance from three years ago.
- Skipping the China Open in Beijing to compete in Nagoya subjects Eala to potential WTA ranking penalties, with her next appearance scheduled at the Wuhan Open on October 12.
