Aldi Opens Huge £500m Distribution Centre in East Mids Creating 1,000 Jobs
The £500 million site will serve nearly 350 stores and handle almost seven million pallets a year, Aldi said.
- Aldi has commenced operations at its new Bardon Distribution Centre in Leicestershire, which the retailer describes as the "largest" warehouse in Great Britain, marking the start of the first phase.
- The Bardon facility represents a more than £500 million investment from Aldi, serving as a National Replenishment Hub to bolster the supermarket's network as part of a £1.6 billion commitment to Britain throughout 2026 and 2027.
- Featuring 19,000 solar panels, the site is the lowest carbon density warehouse within the Aldi South Group, with five interconnected buildings and automated storage technology from partners Dematic and Cimcorp.
- Once fully operational, the facility will employ around 1,000 staff, many transferring from distribution centres in Sawley, Derbyshire, and Atherstone, Warwickshire, while supplying nearly 350 stores and processing nearly seven million pallets annually.
- Chief Executive Officer Giles Hurley stated the technology will "significantly increase the efficiency of our warehouse network," supporting Aldi's goal to reach around 1,500 stores in Great Britain while maintaining cheapest supermarket status for every month of 2026.
