Alcatraz Tourist Ferry Crashes Into San Francisco's Pier 31
Passengers said the ferry struck Pier 31 multiple times, shattering windows and prompting an investigation, while the operator reported no injuries.
On Sunday evening, an Alcatraz City Cruises ferry collided with Pier 31 while docking in San Francisco, shattering a row of windows on the lower passenger deck and leaving dozens of passengers shaken.
Passenger Olivia RiosAcuña had booked the City Cruises tour specifically for her young son's love of boats, spending much of the day on deck before heading downstairs as the ferry prepared to dock.
The ferry reportedly struck the dock multiple times, causing windows to shatter and passengers to fall; video captured by Genesis Alcocer showed the impact as RiosAcuña heard "a really loud noise and the whole boat shook."
Alcatraz City Cruises stated no injuries were reported and all passengers disembarked safely after waiting approximately 20 minutes, though passenger Genesis Alcocer feared the worst, saying "oh my god, we're gonna sink. I'm not the best swimmer."
An investigation is underway to determine the cause, with the Port of San Francisco noting Alcatraz City Cruises bears responsibility for damages; passengers RiosAcuña, Alcocer, and Daniel Aburto said they do not plan to take another City Cruises trip anytime soon.
