In the Hour of Chaos, Allison Russell Chooses Connection
The Montreal-born, Nashville-based singer brings together a wide cast of collaborators and turns from personal trauma toward collective resilience.
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, singer-songwriter Allison Russell released her third solo album, 'In the Hour of Chaos,' featuring collaborators including Norah Jones, Joy Oladokun, Kashus Culpepper, and Kara Jackson.
Moving from documenting personal wounds in her 2021 debut 'Outside Child,' Russell now addresses collective suffering, explaining she wanted to create music rooted in possibility rather than dwelling on crises.
Inspired by her time on Broadway in 'Hadestown,' Russell adopted a partly theatrical approach, describing the album as 'the mixtape for a musical that has yet to be written,' featuring actor Chibueze Ihuoma.
Joni Mitchell partially inspired the community-focused record, with Russell seeking to build 'circles of safety and joyful resistance' against narratives that dehumanize people in her community.
Dedicating the project to her 12-year-old daughter Ida Maeve, who sings on 'Cold April,' Russell emphasizes safeguarding bounty for the next seven generations, stating, 'We have to do the next good thing.
