Albo rejects he’s a ‘fraud’ for UN award despite home woes
Albanese says the campaign would give Australia a stronger voice on peace, climate and technology issues if it wins two-thirds support in 2028.
- In New York, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese officially launched Australia's campaign for a non-permanent, two-year seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2029 and 2030, aiming to give the Indo-Pacific middle power a stronger voice on international decisions.
- Under the slogan "we listen, we partner, we protect," the campaign will focus on Australia's support for Pacific nations and climate change action, including the Prime Minister's tech agenda on artificial intelligence, cyber threats, and online safety.
- The launch occurred as Labor's primary vote fell to 27 per cent in the latest Newspoll, following a difficult year for Albanese marked by backlash to Federal Budget changes and criticism of his response to the Bondi Beach massacre.
- Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume called for transparency regarding the bid, noting the government's record on taxpayer spending while acknowledging that former Minister Julie Bishop had previously lobbied for the position under the Coalition.
- Australia, which belongs to the Western European and Others Group, must win support of two-thirds of United Nations General Assembly members at the June 2028 election to secure one of two vacant positions.
