Byelection called for Calgary-Shaw riding: chief electoral officer
Elections Alberta will post unofficial results after polls close as the UCP and NDP field candidates in the vacant riding.
On Aug 17, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called a by-election in the Calgary-Shaw riding for Sept 14, filling the seat vacant since the former incumbent resigned from The Alberta Legislature.
Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz resigned in May, leaving the seat empty before transitioning to an executive role at Whitecap Resources, a major oil and gas producer.
The United Conservative Party named Mike Derry as its candidate, while NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi selected Kyle Campbell to run for the Opposition NDP in the contest.
Peter Guthrie, a former United Conservative Party cabinet minister, is expected to run for the newly created Progressive Tory Party, complicating a historically conservative riding.
Nenshi urged voters to trust Campbell, stating, "Albertans don't have to stand for this government," to emphasize the need for change on cost of living and public services.
