Edmonton K-6 ‘High-Priority’ Classrooms to Receive 143 Complexity Teams
The funding targets early intervention to support diverse K-6 student needs with 476 teams, including 1,400 teachers and assistants, prioritizing high-complexity schools, officials said.
- On Feb. 12, 2026, the Alberta government announced it is allocating $143 million from the 2025-26 ministry budget to create 476 new complexity teams in K–6 elementary schools.
- New provincewide data show 89,000 classrooms in 1,549 schools with an average class size of 25 students and high-complexity defined as seven or more identified needs.
- Each complexity team will consist of one teacher and two educational assistants, adding about 1,400 extra teachers and educational assistants, with major allocations to metro school boards including Calgary School Division and Edmonton School Division.
- Funds will go out immediately so school boards can start hiring, prioritizing kindergarten to Grade 6 classrooms for early intervention to support students learning English and those with mild or severe needs.
- Jason Schilling, president of the Alberta Teachers' Association, reacted Thursday that the announcement is a long-overdue admission of underfunding, ahead of the Feb. 26 budget unveiling.
