Here’s How the Alberta Government’s $100 Payment Will Work
Nearly 3.4 million residents may receive more than fuel tax relief, officials said, as the province says the rebate will help seniors and non-drivers.
- Beginning July 1, nearly 3.4 million Albertans will receive $100 through the new Alberta Energy Rebate, Premier Danielle Smith announced on Wednesday to address high living costs.
- After past investigations suggested retailers failed to pass savings to consumers, Smith and Finance Minister Jason Nixon pivoted from fuel tax relief to this direct payment method.
- Residents 18 or older with a 2025 household income of $225,000 or less qualify, with automatic enrollment for those receiving Alberta Seniors Benefit, AISH, or ADAP; two-adult households receive $200.
- Nixon stated eligible Albertans will see over 50 per cent more savings per person than fuel tax relief would provide, also benefiting those who do not drive, including transit users and seniors.
- The Canadian Taxpayers Federation criticized the plan, arguing it fails to meet government promises to cut fuel taxes, as CTF Alberta Director Kris Sims urged dropping the fuel tax to zero instead.
