Alberta Adds 10% More Firefighters for 2026 Wildfire Season
The province says the new incentive will help municipalities respond faster as dry conditions drive early fires and nearly 25 active blazes burn.
- On Monday, Forestry and Parks Minister Todd Loewen announced Alberta hired more than 550 seasonal firefighters for this year's wildfire season, with hundreds more available through contracts and mutual aid agreements.
- To facilitate faster responses, the province introduced a mutual aid incentive pilot offering municipalities up to $125,000 in wildfire response support, encouraging local governments to request assistance earlier.
- "When the time comes, we want to make sure local governments are picking up the phones instead of checking their budgets," Loewen explained at a press conference, emphasizing removal of financial barriers.
- This year's response plan includes helicopters equipped with night-vision capability and hoists for rugged terrain, while the Alberta Wildfire dashboard app has been updated to include municipal fire reporting.
- Infrastructure Minister Martin Long noted lessons from the Fort McMurray wildfire continue shaping preparedness, adding that sustained support for community resilience matters as much as immediate response.
