Alberta Announces Next Step in High-Speed Rail Plan Connecting Edmonton and Calgary

- On Monday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced the province will launch a formal request for proposals this fall for a high-speed rail link connecting Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, and Airdrie with stops at both major international airports.
- Alberta's Passenger Rail Master Plan, released in June, identifies high-speed rail as a priority to address rapid population growth. The Calgary-Edmonton corridor is home to roughly 80 per cent of Alberta's population, creating urgent demand for modern transportation infrastructure.
- Dedicated tracks would support trains travelling up to 320 km/h, reducing the three-hour drive to about one hour and 45 minutes. Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen confirmed the province expects the successful proposal to require minimal financial investment from the government.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney's government committed to referring the project to the Major Projects Office once a proponent is selected by April 2027. Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said high-speed rail has "great potential to reshape the way people move in Canada" and supports regional connectivity.
- Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski confirmed Ottawa will collaborate with Indigenous communities and municipalities to assess the project's long-term impacts. This rail initiative represents a 60-year vision for expanding passenger networks across Alberta, potentially reaching Fort McMurray and Crowsnest Pass.
