Albanians Protest Jared Kushner-Linked Luxury Resort
Anti-corruption prosecutors are probing changes to protected coastal land as protesters say the luxury project threatens habitats and public access, officials said.
- Thousands of Albanians protested in Tirana on Tuesday against a luxury resort development linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, on the environmentally sensitive Adriatic coast.
- Kushner's investment firm Affinity Partners is developing the $1.6 billion project on the Zvernec peninsula, a protected wetland home to flamingos, seals, and sea turtles near the Vjosa-Narta landscape.
- Besjana Shehu, co-founder of the Albanian Ornithological Society, told DW that the project threatens "the ecological integrity of more than 18,000 hectares of one of Albania's most important natural corridors."
- Prime Minister Edi Rama defended the project as a "strategic investment" to boost global tourism, though he condemned the "disgusting" behavior of security guards filmed dragging a protester.
- The European Commission stated it is "closely following the developments" amid protests calling "Albania is not for sale," emphasizing that EU standards must be fully considered during the country's accession process.
