Alaska under tsunami advisory after Russian earthquake; California, Hawaii monitoring
The 7.8 magnitude aftershock off Russia follows an 8.8 quake in July; advisory warns of possible strong waves and currents near western Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
- The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Advisory on Thursday for the western Aleutian Islands after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake off Russia, covering from Amchitka Pass to Attu.
- As an aftershock of July 29's M8.8 Kamchatka Peninsula earthquake, the September 18 M7.8 event is the largest since the September 13 M7.4 aftershock, with the Pacific Plate moving west-northwest at 80 mm/year.
- USGS data show the epicenter about 90 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky; officials estimated tsunami waves could reach western Alaska by 12:20 p.m. AKDT, including Shemya Island, but widespread inundation is unlikely.
- The advisory warns that strong waves and dangerous currents threaten people in or very near the water, while minor waves were reported in Hawaii with no significant damage and no tsunami threat to the U.S. West Coast at this time.
- Since the mainshock, more than a dozen aftershocks above magnitude 4.5 have occurred, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued numerous bulletins; historically, the Nov. 4, 1952 magnitude 9 event produced 30-foot waves in Hawaii and the 1923 magnitude 8.4 event struck the Kamchatka Peninsula.
