CMA CGM Expands Air Cargo Operations Closing Air Belgium Acquisition
- On April 30, 2025, CMA CGM completed the takeover of Air Belgium's cargo business after the Belgian court ordered the airline's liquidation.
- The acquisition followed Air Belgium’s financial difficulties worsened by COVID-19 and geopolitical crises, with a rejected rival bid from Air One Belgium.
- CMA CGM plans to maintain the Air Belgium brand and 124 jobs, including 72 pilots, operating four freighters from Belgium and integrating these into its existing air cargo network.
- The group stated this acquisition “enhances its global and European air cargo presence” and will accelerate growth with fleet expansion beginning in 2027 including eight Airbus A350Fs.
- The transfer ensures preservation of cargo jobs and suggests positive prospects for Belgian air freight while concluding the seven-year passenger operation chapter of Air Belgium.
