Air pollution is responsible for thousands of preventable deaths in the European Union, and this despite the "significant improvement" of air quality is taking place. A recent report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) concludes that between 2005 and 2023 premature deaths attributable to fine particles decreased by 57%. Still, unsafe levels of air pollution caused no less than 182,000 deaths in 2023 in the EU.
