Saskatoon, Regina See Air Quality Warnings as Wildfire Smoke Blankets Saskatchewan
SASKATCHEWAN, JUL 21 – Environment Canada warns of very high air quality health index ratings above 10 in multiple Saskatchewan communities due to smoke from 49 active wildfires, including 14 uncontained fires.
- On Tuesday, a dense smoke blanket has forced air quality warnings province-wide, with Regina, Saskatoon, and La Ronge under severe alerts as of Tuesday.
- Environment and Climate Change Canada defines the AQHI as a 1 to 10+ scale, as it measures ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter from burning vegetation.
- Crawford Luke, meteorologist with ECCC, warned `it looks like it's gonna linger for a couple days`, with a wind shift forecast for late Thursday into Friday.
- Children, the elderly and outdoor workers face heightened dangers, and Environment Canada says Buffalo Narrows will remain at a `very high risk` rating above 10 into Wednesday.
- With 49 wildfires , Canadian wildfire smoke may extend impacts through summer, Brown said, as fires have burned since early May and could ramp up again.
