The Indian-led programme would build most aircraft in India and could add aerial refuelling capability, officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Defence Ministry issued a tender worth around ₹1 lakh crore for 60 multirole transport aircraft to replace the Indian Air Force's ageing Soviet-era Antonov An-32 cargo planes.
- The programme mandates that Indian companies lead production, with around 20 per cent of planes arriving in fly-away condition and the remaining aircraft manufactured locally with over 60 per cent indigenous content.
- Defence Officials told ANI that Indian companies including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited , Tata, and Mahindra Defence lead partnerships; Mahindra Defence partnered with Embraer for the C-390 Millennium, while Tata works with Lockheed Martin on the C-130J Super Hercules.
- These multirole transport aircraft will provide the IAF with enhanced capability to rapidly transport troops and equipment, with potential configurations for aerial refuelling to extend operational range.
- Modernization efforts also include a tender for 114 fighter jets and procurement of over 100 trainer planes, while the force is separately inducting around 70 C-295 transport aircraft in partnership with Airbus and Tata.
