The Chinese military has opened a new forward base on a site in northwestern Laos that served as an airfield for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the Vietnam War. CNN reports that the base, located about 64 kilometers north of the capital Vientiane and only 40 kilometers from the nearest border with Thailand, houses the China-Laos Joint Support and Training Center at Ban Kean Airport and the China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy.
The facilities were "designed to help Laos strengthen the training and preparation of its air force pilots and will be maintained jointly by both parties"
