Sheriff Says Javeayah Harris’ Remains Found in Reservoir
Sheriff Marty Sawyer said investigators recovered a few human remains and expect additional charges against the parents in the child-abuse case.
On Thursday, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer confirmed partial remains of 4-year-old Javeayah Harris were recovered in Cedar Creek Reservoir, prompting additional charges against parents Michilae Herring and Johmarea Harris.
Investigators allege the parents used corrosive chemicals and tools to dissolve the child's body after she died from untreated head injuries, then poured remains into Stumpy Pond on June 8.
In his 37-year career, Sheriff Sawyer stated he has "never, ever heard of anything so horrific," adding that it remains unlikely all of the girl's remains will ever be recovered.
Both parents were denied bond Thursday as flight risks, joining existing homicide by child abuse charges, while the Aiken County Sheriff's office continues pursuing justice.
Community members continue leaving items at a makeshift memorial on Hillsboro Street, with around 100 people gathered Tuesday evening to honor the child amid widespread support.
