AI-Powered Smart Trolleys Rolled Out at Preston Supermarket in UK First

The AI-powered trolleys recognise items, show running totals and loyalty savings, and are already in use in more than 100 cities, Instacart said.

  • On Tuesday, Morrisons launched an in-store trial of AI-powered Caper smart trolleys at its Preston supermarket, becoming the first UK retailer to adopt the technology.
  • This partnership marks Instacart's first UK retail deal for the Caper device, already deployed in more than 100 cities across the United States and Australia.
  • The trolleys automatically identify items and weigh fresh produce, while touchscreen displays show running basket totals and allow shoppers to scan their Morrisons More Card for loyalty savings.
  • David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart, said "customers want technology that helps them stay on budget," while Gordon Macpherson, Productivity Director at Morrisons, emphasized making shopping "easier, more rewarding, and more enjoyable."
  • Research from Researchscape International found 54 per cent of UK consumers shop on "autopilot," while 53 per cent have skipped groceries due to budget concerns, driving adoption of budgeting-focused technology.
