Showrunner To Use AI To Rebuild Orson Welles’ Lost, Mutilated Masterpiece
Showrunner's AI-driven project aims to restore 43 minutes of Orson Welles' lost footage using 30,000 frames and traditional techniques over two years.
- On Friday, Showrunner announced a new generative AI model to recreate the lost 43 minutes of Orson Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons.
- Decades earlier, studio trimming and negative destruction produced the loss of about 43 minutes when RKO Pictures cut down Orson Welles's 131-minute original cut to an 88-minute theatrical cut and destroyed negatives to free vault space.
- To reconstruct lost scenes, the team will combine AI-generated approximations with live actors filmed for reshot sequences, using AI face and pose transfer techniques, overseen by filmmaker Brian Rose and FILM-1 model AI VFX artists.
- Showrunner says the work will remain noncommercial due to lack of rights from Warner Bros. Discovery and Concord, with CEO Edward Saatchi saying, `The goal isn't to commercialize the 43 minutes.`
- The move intensifies debates over AI in Hollywood as its use stalled 2023 strikes talks and many classic film fans find AI restorations abhorrent, especially after the Wizard of Oz AI alteration.
