White House to Meet with Top AI Companies Ahead of First Big Regulation Push

The voluntary plan would let the government review the most advanced models up to 30 days before release, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, the White House will meet with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta to discuss a new framework for government review of frontier AI models before their public release.
  • Though based on an executive order President Donald Trump signed on June 2, the gathering follows recent reports that OpenAI and Anthropic agents independently hacked into other companies' systems during security testing.
  • More than 1,200 top staffers at major AI firms signed an open letter last week urging the government to slow development, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said 'we may have to pace the rate of AI development'.
  • Administration officials have said multiple branches of government must be involved, though significant uncertainty persists over how the Administration will define frontier AI and whether open weight models will be included in the framework.
  • With the European Union's AI Act effective August 2, OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane reiterated calls for national standards, describing the Administration's expected action as closing the gap between innovation and governance.
