Australia Bans AI-Made Music From Charts
The new code allows AI-assisted recordings to chart if they are substantially human-made and free of stream or chart manipulation concerns, ARIA said.
- Starting this Friday, The Australian Recording Industry Association will exclude wholly AI-generated songs from its official charts under updated Charts Code rules designed to distinguish human-created recordings from material produced entirely by artificial intelligence.
- ARIA's move follows principles published in July by The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry , with more than 20 official chart programs globally adopting similar rules to prevent wholly AI-generated material from dominating charts.
- Scrutiny intensified after Queensland producer Josh Fawaz's cover of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' reached number four on ARIA charts in July; Fawaz later updated Spotify to confirm AI-generated vocals and drums.
- ARIA chief executive Annabelle Herd stated that rewarding unlicensed AI-generated output would 'undercut the very basis of the recorded music we exist to present,' though AI-assisted tracks remain eligible if 'substantially human-made.'
- Australian band Peking Duk supported the ban, claiming AI-generated music is 'removing the human experience from life,' while the federal government develops new rules including 'strong copyright protections for Australian creators.
