We will do battle with AI chatbots as we did with Grok, says Starmer
The UK government is closing legal gaps after AI chatbot Grok was exploited to create illegal sexual deepfakes, making providers liable under the Online Safety Act, officials said.
- On Monday, the UK government said it will include AI chatbots in the Online Safety Act to close a legal gap after Grok let users create sexualised pictures, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said `The new measures announced today include crackdown on vile illegal content created by AI`.
- Against that backdrop, the UK's data watchdog has opened a probe into X and xAI over Grok's sexualised deepfakes, while Ofcom noted some chatbots fall outside the Act.
- Under the Online Safety Act, platforms hosting potentially harmful content must use strict age verification tools like facial imagery or credit card checks, and the law bans non-consensual intimate images and sexual deepfakes.
