TCS Expects AI Agents to Match Human Workforce Within 3 Years, Says Chairman N Chandrasekaran

TCS said AI agents will automate more work and help drive all revenue by the end of the decade, while hiring slows and no mass layoffs are planned.

  • At the annual general meeting on Tuesday, Chairman Chandrasekaran announced that Mumbai-headquartered TCS expects to reach a point where AI agents equal the number of its employees.
  • India's $315-billion IT sector faces investor concerns that AI could disrupt its traditional, labour-intensive model, while geopolitical turmoil has dented client demand and forced firms to slow hiring.
  • TCS headcount fell by more than 23,000 in the fiscal year ended March 2026, and shares have fallen more than 32% so far in 2026, though the firm does not plan to downsize.
  • Chandrasekaran expects 100% of TCS revenue will have an AI component before the end of the decade, with annualised AI revenue crossing $2.3 billion in the quarter ended March 31.
  • As companies adapt to AI-driven ways of working, Chandrasekaran stated, 'Some of the work being done will go to AI agents,' noting this transition will affect the industry and India.
