Celtic Star to Shatter EFL Championship Transfer Record as Deal Agreed with West Ham
The fee could rise above £25 million with add-ons as West Ham move to strengthen midfield before the transfer deadline.
On Friday, West Ham agreed to a record-breaking £22m deal for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, who travelled to London to undergo a medical and finalize a long-term contract.
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo is bolstering the squad following West Ham's relegation from the Premier League as the club aims to secure an immediate return to the English top-flight.
The £22m fee sets a new Championship transfer record, surpassing the £20.8m Burnley paid for Florentino Luis in July, while Engels recorded 17 goals and 22 assists in 100 appearances for Celtic.
Although Celtic hoped to hold out for £25million, the club green-lit the exit after the player was "pushing" for a deal, positioning Engels to bolster the Londoners' midfield options.
West Ham open their Championship campaign on Sunday with a trip to face promotion rivals Burnley, having raised more than £150m through player sales including Crysencio Summerville to finance recruitment.
