Air Canada, Flight Attendants Union to Resume Negotiations as Strike Threat Looms

QUEBEC, CANADA, AUG 8 – Flight attendants voted 99.7% in favor of a strike mandate to push for higher wages and end unpaid labor, with 10,000 members represented by the union, officials said.

  • Today, Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees return to the bargaining table Friday after members voted 99.7 per cent in favour of a strike mandate.
  • After conciliation failed, the strike mandate vote kicked off July 28, leading to ongoing contract negotiations since the start of the year between Air Canada and CUPE.
  • Completed on Tuesday, the vote is required for legal job action and allows flight attendants to strike as early as this month with 72 hours' notice.
  • In an e-mail, spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said it's premature to discuss possible contingencies, as Air Canada is focused on reaching a deal and is not yet considering cancellations or postponements.
  • In the latest bargaining positions, Air Canada proposed a multi-year pay increase and offered an overall increase of more than 30 per cent over four years, says the airline.
