Yankees Sending Gerrit Cole to the Mound vs. Rays' Drew Rasmussen in Game 1 of AL Division Series
The Yankees chose Gerrit Cole over Carlos Rodón for Game 1 after internal debate, citing his postseason track record and matchup edge against Tampa Bay.
- The New York Yankees selected Gerrit Cole to start Saturday's American League Division Series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. The decision places the veteran right-hander at the forefront of the postseason rotation following the Yankees' Wild Card sweep.
- Manager Boone weighed the decision between Cole and Carlos Rodón, a dependable arm who posted a 1.42 ERA in September. "Carlos had earned the spot," pitching coach Matt Blake told the New York Daily News.
- Cole owns a 2.77 ERA over 133.1 postseason innings, reinforcing the team's confidence in his October experience. Rodón recorded a 1.89 ERA over his final seven starts after Cole's recovery from 2025 Tommy John surgery.
- Despite missing the Game 1 nod, Rodón remains a critical asset who could appear in the bullpen. Manager Boone expressed confidence in both pitchers, noting that Rodón is "very much in play" for subsequent games.
- The upcoming ALDS tests the Yankees against a Rays team known for elite defense and disciplined play. Rodón emphasized their challenge, stating, "They play good defense. You don't see that in the game much anymore.
